Click an era in the timeline below to see what was happening in the world of Cheerwine at that time.

Plastic 2-liter bottles were introduced. Although nobody in America in 1979 has any idea what a "liter" is, Cheerwine drinkers agree
more Cheerwine is a good thing!
In 1978, Cliff Ritchie joined Piedmont Cheerwine Bottling as warehouse manager in Greensboro where Piedmont Cheerwine Bottling's facility
soon came to be known as the "Best Little Warehouse in Piedmont!"
In 1979, Mark Ritchie came to work for Carolina Beverage Corp. as a Field Rep. So when Mark asks if you want to hear a good one about
"playing the field" in the 70s, get ready for a story about work!

Cheerwine begins expanding its distribution area more aggressively- the battle against bland soft drinks marches on!
Diet Cheerwine sweetened with saccharin was re-launched in 1981. In 1984 Caffeine Free Diet Cheerwine sweetened with NutraSweet was launched.
Life gets sweeter for Diet Cheerwine drinkers!
In 1984, John Spencer developed a high strength concentrate without sugar and water. Doing so rendered the 50 gallon steel drums obsolete
and reduced shipping and labor costs. Spencer also comes up with a plan to turn the steel drums into the Cheerwine Steel Drum Band. Luckily,
his first idea is a success!
In 1987, Cheerwine changed its logo to remove the underline and include a splash graphic. All subliminal messages inserted over the years
are also removed, but nobody notices.
In 1988, Carolina Cola was introduced, but discontinued in 1990 with RC Cola franchise added to Cheerwine Bottling Co. Look for a Carolina Cola
can on ebay today!
1989 was the last run of returnable 8-oz. bottles. To this day, Cheerwine is still waiting for the return of the last one.
